Razia Noreen Risks Her Life to Save a Baby
Razia Noreen Risks Her Life to Save a Baby

Nurse Razia Noreen has been recognised for her extraordinary courage during the recent fire at the neonatal ward of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad.

As flames spread through the ward, she reportedly put her own safety at risk to reach a newborn and bring the baby to safety.

Her quick response came during an extremely dangerous situation, when vulnerable newborns and hospital staff were exposed to the rapidly developing emergency.

For the families whose children were being cared for in the ward, the actions of medical staff became critical in protecting patients.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the Sitara e Khidmat for Razia Noreen in recognition of her actions during the PIMS fire. Alongside the national civil award, she will receive a cash reward of Rs10 million for the courage she demonstrated while responding to the emergency.

The prime minister praised Razia’s bravery and dedication, describing her actions as an example of selfless service during a critical situation.

The recognition acknowledges not only the successful rescue of a newborn but also the personal risk she accepted while carrying out her professional duty.

A Reminder of the Courage of Frontline Healthcare Workers

Razia’s story has resonated particularly strongly because newborn patients are among the most vulnerable people inside a hospital. Unable to protect themselves during an emergency, they depend entirely on medical professionals and caregivers to act quickly when their safety is threatened.

Nurses are often among the first healthcare workers responding when patients require immediate assistance.

Their responsibilities can become even more demanding during emergencies, when every decision can have life changing consequences and staff must balance patient safety with their own.

A Library on Two Wheels
A Library on Two Wheels

In the streets of Lyari, Karachi, a young man is bringing books to children who may not have easy access to them. Mohammad Noman became a storyteller with Kahaani Sawaari, a mobile literacy initiative by GoRead.pk.

Instead of waiting for children to find a library, the library comes to them. Noman transformed an old ice cream cart into a mobile library, filling it with books and taking it through neighbourhoods.

He Knows What It Means to Miss School
He Knows What It Means to Miss School

Noman’s connection with the children he meets is personal. He had left school as a teenager before eventually returning to education, giving him an understanding of how easily circumstances can interrupt a child’s learning.

Through Kahaani Sawaari, he now uses storytelling to make reading feel accessible, engaging and enjoyable. Rather than simply handing children books, he sits with them, reads aloud and brings the stories to life.

The idea is simple but powerful: a child does not always need a grand library to discover books.

The initiative has grown far beyond a single cart or one neighbourhood. According to reporting by The Guardian in 2024, Kahaani Sawaari had reached more than 15,000 children through around 700 sessions.

The project focuses on bringing literacy and storytelling into communities where access to books and educational resources can be limited.

Its impact is not measured only in the number of books distributed, but also in the moments when children become interested in reading and learning.

Sometimes, Hope Comes on a Cart
Sometimes, Hope Comes on a Cart

Noman’s mobile library is a reminder that improving education does not always begin with building something enormous. Sometimes, it starts with one person, a few books and the decision to keep showing up.

By taking stories directly into Lyari’s streets, Kahaani Sawaari creates a space where children can read, listen, imagine and simply enjoy being around books.

For children who may face barriers to formal education, these small encounters can make learning feel possible again.

A School Built Around Dignity
A School Built Around Dignity

In Haripur, one man took a simple approach to a difficult problem: if families could not afford school fees, make education almost free.

Zahid Kazmi founded Babul Ilm school for children from economically disadvantaged families, asking parents to contribute just Rs1.

The symbolic fee was not about collecting money. It was about preserving dignity and ensuring that parents did not feel they were receiving charity when sending their children to school.

Why One Rupee Mattered
Why One Rupee Mattered

For families struggling to meet everyday expenses, even ordinary school costs can become a barrier to education. Babul Ilm was created around the idea that poverty should not determine a child’s access to learning.

By keeping the contribution at just one rupee, the school offered families a way to participate rather than simply receive assistance.

Sponsors helped cover essential costs including books, clothing and transportation, making it easier for children to remain connected to their education.

The school’s story was never only about one person. Kazmi relied on his own resources, friends, philanthropists and overseas Pakistanis to support the initiative and meet the needs of its students.

Of the school’s 140 students, more than 100 were reportedly sponsored, allowing children from families with limited means to continue their education.

Behind those numbers were individual children who could attend classes, access learning materials and travel to school.

A Small Fee, A Bigger Possibility
A Small Fee, A Bigger Possibility

The story of Babul Ilm is ultimately about more than a school fee. It is about what happens when someone looks at an obstacle and chooses to make education easier to reach rather than accept that poverty should close the door.

One rupee may seem insignificant, but for the children entering Babul Ilm, it represented something much larger: the opportunity to sit in a classroom, learn alongside others and imagine a future beyond their circumstances.

Zahid Kazmi’s initiative offers a quietly powerful reminder that meaningful change does not always begin with enormous resources.

The upgraded institute also features new facilities focused on diagnosis, disease monitoring and veterinary research. During his visit, the chief minister inspected the newly developed diagnostic bay, post mortem hall and laboratory facilities.

Modern diagnostic infrastructure can play an important role in identifying animal diseases more efficiently and supporting timely veterinary interventions.

Stronger laboratory capabilities can also help researchers study diseases and improve understanding of threats affecting livestock.

Supporting Sindh’s Livestock Future

The investment in veterinary infrastructure extends beyond animal treatment, with potential benefits for Sindh’s wider livestock and agricultural economy. Healthy animals are closely linked to the livelihoods and food security of communities that depend on livestock.

By improving treatment, diagnostics and disease monitoring, the upgraded facilities can help strengthen the health and productivity of animals across the province.

This is particularly important for rural families where livestock can represent a major source of income and financial security.
