A $1 Trillion Economic Ambition
A $1 Trillion Economic Ambition

Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal has outlined an ambitious economic vision for Pakistan, saying the country aims to build a $1 trillion economy by 2035.

The target, he explained, is not simply about achieving a larger GDP. It is intended to reflect a broader transformation toward an economy that is more productive, competitive, resilient and capable of generating sustainable growth.

Pakistan’s economic roadmap places growing emphasis on areas that could reshape productivity and competitiveness, including digital transformation, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and technology.

Iqbal has also highlighted the importance of developing human capital, modernising infrastructure, strengthening energy systems and improving climate resilience as part of the country’s future economic strategy.

Reaching the $1 trillion ambition will require sustained economic growth alongside greater productivity and investment.

Iqbal has stressed that policy continuity will be essential to maintaining momentum and giving businesses confidence to invest for the long term.

The government also sees stronger public private partnerships as an important part of the transformation, bringing together state institutions, businesses and investors to support major economic initiatives.

SBP Records Nearly Rs 2 Trillion Profit

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) recorded a net profit of Rs 1.99 trillion for the financial year ending June 30, 2026, maintaining its position as a significant source of income for the government.

However, the figure marks a decline from the Rs 2.5 trillion profit recorded during the previous financial year, representing a drop of around 20 percent.

The reduction largely reflects lower earnings from interest and mark up as monetary conditions eased during the year.

Where Did the SBP’s Earnings Come From?

The SBP’s financial results show that net interest income remained its largest source of earnings, reaching approximately Rs 1.92 trillion during FY2026.

However, net interest income declined by around 26 percent compared with the previous year as interest rates moved lower.

The changing monetary environment therefore had a direct impact on the central bank’s profitability. Other sources provided some support.

The SBP’s profits also have a direct impact on Pakistan’s public finances. After accounting and statutory adjustments, the central bank transferred approximately Rs 1.932 trillion of its surplus profit to the federal government.

Such transfers provide an additional source of government revenue and can help reduce pressure on public finances. They can also lower the government’s reliance on borrowing to meet its financial requirements.

The latest figures show the scale of the SBP’s contribution to the national treasury.

The SBP’s latest results also offer a glimpse into how changing interest rates can affect the finances of a central bank.

As monetary conditions eased during FY2026, income from interest and mark up declined, bringing overall profit down from the previous year.

Despite this reduction, the SBP remained highly profitable, recording almost Rs 2 trillion in net earnings. Foreign exchange gains and stronger dividend income helped soften the decline and support the final result.

From Unused Land to Shrimp Farms
From Unused Land to Shrimp Farms

Punjab is moving to develop a major shrimp farming industry, with a plan to establish farms across 30,000 acres of land.

The project, approved under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is aimed at expanding aquaculture, creating employment and increasing Pakistan’s seafood exports.

The initiative is designed to turn underused and barren land into productive agricultural and aquaculture sites. Bahawalpur and other areas across the province are among the locations being developed.

The project has already moved beyond the planning stage. Around 1,000 shrimp farms covering 5,500 acres have been prepared, with production already underway.

At Ali Wala, a large aquaculture development spanning 5,300 acres includes 737 ponds.

A dedicated hatchery is expected to produce around 280 million shrimp annually, creating a major supply base for the emerging industry.

Modern technology is at the heart of Punjab’s shrimp farming plans.

Following successful results in Muzaffargarh, authorities are working to accelerate the adoption of advanced farming techniques in areas including Sargodha, while gradually bringing private companies into the sector.

In Sargodha, a 500 acre project with 167 ponds is planned, supported by solar energy and modern aquaculture equipment. The province is also developing infrastructure to support farmers.

Punjab’s shrimp farming expansion could give Pakistan a new opportunity to strengthen its blue economy and increase seafood exports.

By developing farms on land that was previously underused, the project aims to create a productive industry while generating employment and business opportunities.

The government has also highlighted the potential to reduce reliance on imported seafood and save foreign exchange by increasing domestic production.

For young people, the emerging sector could create opportunities across farming, hatcheries, processing, logistics, technology and exports.

A Major Push for Economic Cooperation
A Major Push for Economic Cooperation

Pakistan and Iran have agreed to significantly strengthen their economic partnership by setting a new bilateral trade target of $10 billion.

The understanding was reached during the 10th Pakistan-Iran Joint Trade Committee (JTC) meeting, where senior officials from both countries discussed ways to expand trade, investment, and commercial cooperation.

The decision reflects a shared recognition that the current level of trade does not fully represent the economic potential of the two neighboring countries. With geographic proximity, cultural ties, and complementary markets, both sides see substantial room for growth.

A key focus of the discussions was the need to improve border infrastructure and connectivity to support smoother movement of goods and services.

Efficient border facilities are essential for reducing delays, lowering transportation costs, and making cross-border trade more attractive for businesses.

Both countries emphasized upgrading trade routes, customs facilities, and logistical coordination to facilitate faster commercial activity. Better connectivity is expected to benefit traders operating in border regions and strengthen economic links between local communities.

Pakistan and Iran also agreed to work on simplifying customs procedures, reducing unnecessary trade barriers, and accelerating negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). These measures are aimed at making it easier for businesses to export, import, and invest across both markets.

Simplified customs processes can reduce administrative costs and improve the overall ease of doing business, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises that often face greater procedural challenges in cross-border trade.
