Retired Officers to Support School Oversight
Retired Officers to Support School Oversight

Punjab is preparing to introduce a new monitoring arrangement under which retired army officers would take on supervisory roles across schools in the province.

The initiative aims to strengthen oversight of educational institutions by focusing on areas such as discipline, security, administration and school facilities.

The retired officers are expected to bring their experience in organisation, management and supervision to help identify operational gaps and provide education authorities with more regular assessments of conditions within schools.

Under the proposed system, the officers could inspect school facilities, review administrative practices and flag issues requiring attention. Their observations would provide authorities with an additional channel for monitoring schools.

Student and staff safety is also expected to remain a key priority, with the initiative aimed at identifying weaknesses in existing security arrangements and ensuring schools maintain appropriate standards.

The additional oversight could help authorities detect problems earlier, allowing relevant departments to respond more quickly while supporting school administrations in maintaining organised and secure learning environments.

The proposed deployment forms part of wider efforts to improve school governance and institutional accountability across Punjab.

Regular monitoring could give education authorities a clearer understanding of challenges faced by schools in different areas.

Retired officers would work alongside existing school administrations and education officials rather than replacing their responsibilities, providing an additional layer of supervision and administrative support.

Cutting Pakistan’s Import Bill
Cutting Pakistan’s Import Bill

Pakistan currently spends around $4 billion every year on edible oil imports, creating a significant burden on the country’s import bill.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said even reducing this spending by $400 million through increased domestic production would represent a major achievement.

The government is looking towards olive cultivation as part of a broader strategy to strengthen local agricultural production.

Pakistan’s Olive Industry Is Growing

Pakistan’s olive cultivation has expanded significantly over the past decade. The number of olive trees has increased from around 500,000 in 2016 to more than seven million today.

Olive plantations now cover approximately 60,000 acres across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh, showing the crop’s growing presence across different regions.

The National Olive Value Chain Policy aims to build on this progress by improving production, processing, quality control, branding and exports.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked Italy for its longstanding partnership with Pakistan in agriculture and industry, highlighting more than 70 years of cooperation between the two countries.

The new training programme is expected to give young Pakistani graduates practical exposure to advanced techniques used in olive production and value chain development.

Alongside olives, Shehbaz also called for greater cultivation of palm and sunflower crops to help reduce Pakistan’s edible oil import bill.

Muhammad Qasim, a young student from a Daanish School, received an extraordinary opportunity to experience public administration by serving as Deputy Commissioner of Rajanpur for a day.

Giving Students Experiences Beyond Textbooks

Educational initiatives that place students in real world environments can create valuable learning experiences beyond traditional classroom lessons.

By interacting with professionals and observing how institutions function, young people can develop a clearer understanding of different careers and responsibilities.

For students like Muhammad Qasim, such exposure can encourage ambition while helping them identify the skills they may need for their future.

When the Water Threatened Her Education
When the Water Threatened Her Education

At just 12 years old, Razish had already experienced how quickly floods could disrupt everyday life. Living in Rajanpur, she knew that rising water could mean closed roads, damaged homes and, most painfully for her, interrupted schooling.

Each time flooding threatened her community, continuing her education became more difficult. Yet Razish did not want the water to decide whether she could remain a student.

For a young girl growing up in a flood prone area, education represented more than attending classes. It was a path towards the future she imagined for herself.

Floods Kept Coming Back
Floods Kept Coming Back

Rajanpur is among the areas of Pakistan that can face severe flooding, leaving communities vulnerable when water levels rise. For children like Razish, the consequences extend beyond damaged homes and disrupted routines.

When floods make roads difficult to cross or schools impossible to reach, children can lose valuable time in their education. Repeated interruptions can make it harder to keep up with lessons and, in some cases, force children to leave school altogether.

Razish faced this uncertainty more than once. But instead of accepting that her education had to stop whenever flooding arrived, she continued looking for ways to stay connected to her studies.

Preparing Before Disaster Strikes
Preparing Before Disaster Strikes

Razish benefited from a programme focused on anticipatory action, an approach designed to provide support before a disaster causes its worst damage.

Instead of waiting for floodwaters to arrive, assistance is provided when forecasts indicate that communities could be at risk.

For families facing repeated flooding, this kind of early support can make a significant difference. It can help communities prepare, protect essential needs and reduce the disruption caused by extreme weather.

Her Future Is Bigger Than the Floods
Her Future Is Bigger Than the Floods

Razish’s story reflects the determination of children who refuse to let circumstances define their future. Floods may have interrupted her routine, but they did not take away her desire to learn and build a better life.

Her experience also highlights an important reality for children living in climate vulnerable communities. When disasters repeatedly disrupt education, keeping children connected to school requires preparation, support and community resilience.

For Razish, every lesson represents another step forward despite the uncertainty around her.

A Mission That Started Small
A Mission That Started Small

For Shirin and Shahab Husain, improving children’s access to education began not with a large organisation or ambitious campaign, but with a commitment to communities around Karachi that often receive little attention.

Through the Sindh Singhar Initiative, the couple began working to create educational opportunities for children living in underserved areas on Karachi’s outskirts.

Their approach has been focused on building something lasting rather than seeking quick results.

Five Schools, 19 Communities
Five Schools, 19 Communities

The Sindh Singhar Initiative now reaches children across 19 communities around Karachi, providing access to education through a network of five schools. For families living in underserved areas, having a school within reach can make an enormous difference.

The initiative focuses on communities where educational opportunities can be limited by poverty, distance and a lack of nearby facilities.

Instead of asking families to overcome those barriers alone, the initiative brings schooling closer to where children live.

Building Opportunity, Not Just Classrooms
Building Opportunity, Not Just Classrooms

What makes Shirin and Shahab’s story meaningful is the long term nature of their work.

Their focus has not simply been on putting classrooms in underserved communities, but on creating spaces where children can receive an education and build a stronger foundation for their future.

For children growing up in communities with limited resources, education can open doors that would otherwise remain out of reach.

A school can become a place where children discover their abilities, develop aspirations and gain the confidence to pursue opportunities beyond their immediate surroundings.

A Quiet Story of Lasting Impact
A Quiet Story of Lasting Impact

Shirin and Shahab Husain’s journey is a reminder that meaningful change does not always arrive with headlines or grand announcements. Sometimes, it grows quietly through years of consistent effort and a commitment to people who need opportunities the most.

From one initiative to five schools serving 19 communities, their work has created an educational network for children around Karachi’s outskirts.

The numbers tell part of the story, but the real impact lies in the students who now have a place to learn and a reason to dream bigger.
